بدأ مركز منارة (تلفزيون) الشرق الأوسط منذ بداية التسعينات مع بداية بث MBC (تعرف الآن باسمها الجديد وهو MBC 1) كأول محطة تلفزيونية فضائية مفتوحة يمتلكها القطاع الخاص، تبث على مدار الساعة. وقد بدأ بثها بتاريخ 18 سبتمبر 1991. وقد كان مقرها يقع بمدينة لندن، المملكة المتحدة. وكانت تقدم برامج ترفيهية وإخبارية أصبح لها مشاهدون كثيرون في جميع أرجاء الوطن العربي.

MBC was launched in 1991 as the first privately owned and independent Arabic satellite TV station in Saudi Arabia.. Then, it was transferred to Dubai in 2000. It has been based there since 2001.
MBC was directly linked to King Fahd himself.It was founded in London by two entrepreneurs, one of whom, Waleed al Ibrahim, is the brother of King Fahd’s third wife, al Jawhara al Ibrahim, and uncle of the king’s youngest son, Abdul Aziz. Waleed al Ibrahim was still in his twenties when he founded MBC. The other founder was Saleh Kamal. Kamal later left MBC and founded Arab Radio and Television (ART), which began transmission in 1994.
MBC is owned by King Fahd’s brother-in-law, Waleed bin Ibrahim al Ibrahim. However, fifty percent of the MBC profits are owned by late King Fahd’s youngest son and al-Ibrahim’s maternal nephew, Abdulaziz bin Fahd. It is reported that Abdulaziz bin Fahd deals with both the profits and the ideology of MBC Channels, including al Arabiya.On the other hand, it is argued that King Fahd financed MBC significantly during his reign.
